Speakers' Bios
Dr. Franco Cavalli was born in Locarno, Switzerland, and is married with seven children. He trained in internal medicine and medical oncology in Berne, Milan, Brussels and London. Dr. Cavalli is Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI), Bellinzona, the comprehensive cancer centre for the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. He is also Professor in Medical Oncology at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and the University of Varese (Italy). His research priorities are new drugs and new treatment modalities, haematological malignancies, including lymphomas, and breast cancer. Initially, he concentrated on leukemia and represented Switzerland in the Cancer and Leukemia Group B. Later, his research focused on breast cancer. In recent years, his main interest has been malignant lymphoma. He was instrumental in creating the International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group (IELSG). Every third year, Dr. Cavalli organizes the International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma in Lugano, Switzerland, the leading international forum for basic and clinical research in lymphomas. Since 1995, Dr. Cavalli has been a member of the Swiss Parliament, where he focuses on debates about health care and health policy. He is particularly interested in palliative care and end-of-life issues. Twenty years ago, with other doctors in Italian-speaking Switzerland, Dr. Cavalli founded the Association for Medical Aid to Central America. Through this association, he has coordinated many projects in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. He is also President of the South Europe New Drug Organisation (SENDO). Dr. Cavalli has been President of the Swiss Cancer League and Chairman of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research. He also has chaired the Early Clinical Trials Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. For the last two decades, he has served on the Scientific Committee of the European School of Oncology. Dr. Cavalli founded Annals of Oncology, of which he was Editor in Chief from 1990 to 2000. He has written five books, including the Textbook of Medical Oncology (together with Heine H. Hansen and Stanley Kaye), and about 450 scientific papers. He has received 16 international awards – amongst them the Pezcoller Award, the New Drug Development Organisation Honorary Award, the Greidinger Award in Haifa, Israel, and the Waldman Award in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. In January 2006, Dr. Cavalli was voted Switzerland’s “Person of the Year”. He received the Swiss Award for his contribution to society – in particular, for his work in the fight against cancer in the developing world. Dr. Franco Cavalli succeeded Dr. John R. Seffrin as President of the International Union Against Cancer at the UICC World Cancer Congress in Washington DC in July 2006.
After medical graduation from the University of Singapore , Khee Chee moved to Australia and through a succession of Internships and Surgical Resident at Royal Adelaide Hospital , Bankstown Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital, NSW. Surgical Registrar positions in a number of Surgery departments in Australian hospitals between 1979 and 1983 led to the position of Senior Surgical Registrar/Lecturer in Surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research in London from 1983 to ‘85. Specialising in Head and Neck surgery Khee Chee spent a further year at the Royal Marsden before continuing his training at the Department of Surgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center . Recruited back to Asia, Khee Chee became a Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital in 1988, and was Head and Senior Consultant Surgeon at Singapore General Hospital from 1993 to early 2004. Presently he is the Director/CEO of the National Cancer Centre Singapore and Professor at the National University of Singapore. He is also the current Vice Dean of Clinical and Faculty Affairs of the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore. He has wide ranging research interests but has gained a particular reputation in the conduct of clinical trials for new cancer treatments and in the field of biophotonics and its role as a new imaging modality for the early detection of cancer.
Dr Anil K D'cruz is Professor and Chief, Department of Head and Neck Surgery, at the Tata Memorial Hospital , Mumbai , India . He graduated from St.John's Medical College , Bangalore in 1984 & went on to complete his Masters in general surgery at the Mumbai University . He is also a Diplomate of the National Board, New Delhi . He heads the department of head and neck surgery at Tata Memorial Hospital which is one of busiest head and neck services registering over 6000 new cases annually. In addition the service performs approximately 2000 major resections, and 1500 minor procedures which include endoscopies, and laser surgeries. He is also the convener of the multimodality head and neck working group at the hospital. Dr D'Cruz is a teacher for the M.Ch (superspeciality) training programme in surgical oncology at the Mumbai University and has been actively involved in teaching activities for post graduates in Otorhinolaryngology, General Surgery and Surgical Oncology across the country. He is actively involved in research in head and neck cancers and plays a pivotal role in a number of trials. He has been principal investigator of a Phase I trial evaluating the role of Interstitial Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in advanced cancers and was the Global Principal Investigator for another trial evaluating the role of PDT in recurrent, refractory head and neck tumors. He is also the principal investigator of multicentric, multinational trials studying the role of targeted therapy in head and neck cancers in the concurrent, adjuvant and the palliative setting. He is in the process of initiation of a gene therapy trial which would be the first of its kind in the country. He is pioneering research in the use of curcumin in patients with head and neck cancer and has received funding from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, for the same. He is part of a project for the development and validation of molecular cytogenetic studies / Proteomics in oral cancers. Results of this work have been filed for patent. His major areas of interest in clinical research are management of neck metastasis, conservative laryngeal surgery and cancers of the oral cavity, thyroid as well as quality of life issues. He is currently running a large prospective randomized controlled trial evaluating the role of elective neck dissection in the management of early oral cancers. Dr D'cruz is a member of numerous professional bodies in the country which include, The Indian Society of Surgical Oncology, Association of Surgeons of India, Indian Society for Cancer Research, Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology, Indian Society of Head and Neck Oncology and the Action council for Tobacco Control. He serves on the Executive Committee on some of these associations. He is on the task force for Chronic Diseases, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology , India . He is also a Founding fellow of the International Association of Oral Oncology and Indian Head and Neck Co-operative group. Dr D'Cruz has over 70 peer reviewed publications, and chapters to his name. He has delivered over 150 invited lectures and orations, both nationally and internationally. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Head Neck journals and also is a reviewer for several scientific journals both national and international.
I am a founding member of the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) and at various stages in its history have served as its Chairman, Hon President and Group Coordinator. In 1996 I was responsible for setting up the Central Office for the coordination of TROG at the Newcastle Mater Hospital . Currently I am chairman of two of its randomised trials addressing the value of different durations of androgen deprivation in conjunction with radiotherapy for prostate cancer, both of which are funded by the NHMRC. I have also taken a leading role in coordinating many of TROG's oesophageal and head and neck trials. My long standing interest in normal tissue injury has contributed significantly to the establishment of the clinical laboratory in Newcastle and its many projects. My work has attracted six NHMRC project grants, NHMRC enabling grant and numerous project grants from other sources. Apart from several book chapters, editorials and letters, I am the author of 118 full length publications. In addition I have been a regular invited speaker at meetings and institutions both in Europe and the United States . Apart from being the Regional Editor of Clinical Oncology (UK) and membership of the editorial board of the journal Radiotherapy and Oncology, I regularly review articles for other international journals, and many Australasian journals. Other peer review activities include grants assessments for the NHMRC, Queensland Cancer Fund, Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria, Anti-Cancer Foundation of South Australia and Cancer Foundation of West Australia. Dr. Dinshaw was appointed Director of Tata Memorial Centre in 1995, and is a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Centre. Dr. Dinshaw has been involved in the area of radiation oncology for many years, and has been honoured with numerous awards for her contributions, amongst them, the Padma Shri National Award from the government of India in 2001, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) Roll of Honour in 1996 and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Zoroastrian Foundation in 2005. Her distinguished contribution included serving as the Past President of the International Society for Radiation Oncology (ISRO) (1997 - 2001), Past President of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (1995-1996), Elected Council Member of UICC (1998-2006), and Member of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Ethics Review Committee (2005), amongst many others. In May 2006, Dr. Dinshaw was invited to deliver the Second International Agency for Research on Cancer Lecture with Medal of Honour in Lyon , France . She is also a member of the editorial board of more than 150 international and national journals and scientific publications.
Professor Ell is the Professor of Nuclear Medicine and Director at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine at University College of London, and is also the UCL Hospitals NHS Trust Clinical Director. Graduated in 1969, Professor Ell has a long and distinguished association with Nuclear Medicine, and was recently awarded the WNA (World Nuclear Association) Distinguished Award for Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy in 2006. A founding member of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine in 1985, he was the association's President from 1994 till 1996, and was recently named Honorary Member of the same association in 2006. He is also the Corresponding Member of the Finnish, Swiss and German Societies of Nuclear Medicine. Professor Ell has also written and published more than 600 full length peer-reviewed manuscripts, 12 text books, and more than 600 scientific abstracts and presentations, mostly presented at international symposiums and congresses. He was also the editor/co-editor of 10 books, amongst them " Nuclear Medicine " which was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Book Award. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine from 1990 till 2003. Professor Ell has spoken at numerous international forums, including the European Association of Nuclear Medicine's Highlights Lecture in 2004 and the USA Society of Nuclear Medicine's Henry Wagner Memorial Lecture in 2003. Fluent in French, Portuguese, German and English, Professor Ell has a keen interest in Europe , travel, politics, cinema, opera and music.
Lesley Fallowfield is Professor of Psycho-oncology at Brighton &Sussex Medical School , University of Sussex where she is Director of the Cancer Research UK Psychosocial Oncology Group. Professor Fallowfield originally trained as a nurse at Guy's Hospital London but then did a BSc in Experimental Psychology at Sussex . Research for her doctorate in psychophysics was completed at the Universities of Sussex and Cambridge . She was a senior lecturer in health psychology at the Royal London Medical College where she gained a career development fellowship and a major programme grant from the Cancer Research Campaign. In 1991 she became full-time Director of the Psychosocial Oncology Group. Professor Fallowfield was awarded the first European chair in Psycho-oncology from University College London in 1997. Her research interests are wide and include the measurement of quality of life in clinical trials of cancer therapy and the training of communication skills for health care professionals in cancer. She has published over 250 papers, and written or co-edited 3 books. She lectures and runs training workshops throughout the world in psychosocial oncology, quality of life assessment and communication skills.
Marilène Filbet, MD, is Director of the Palliative Care Unit at the University Hospital Lyon Sud, Lyon, France. Following her medical degree and internship at the Hopitaux de Lyon she specialised in pneumology and internal medicine. She was involved in establishing the first Palliative Care Unit of this area in 1988 admitting mostly cancer patients and AIDS patients. She studies pain in elderly patients and joined the DOLOPLUS group, and pain in AIDS patients. The unit with 12 beds palliative care is now establish in a university Hospital Lyon Sud HCL Lyon,France, with two supports teams, research and education, it become a Center of Palliative Care. Dr Filbet teaches medicine at undergraduate level at several medical schools in France and at a postgraduate level is responsible for the intra-university Diploma of Palliative Care at the University of Lyon. In addition, she has been invited to hold numerous guest lectures at other Universities and is involved in teaching for caregivers, such as nurses and physiotherapists. She is chairing the EAPC Task force for training for physicians. Dr Filbet is the President of the Board of Directors of the European Association of Palliative Care, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the French Society of Palliative Care for nine years.

Dr Cynthia Goh is Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Palliative Medicine at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore . She is a Board Member and past Chairman of the Singapore Hospice Council, the umbrella body for hospice organisations in Singapore . She is also the Honorary Secretary of the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network. Dr Goh trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London , qualifying with MB,BS in 1974 and MRCP (UK) in 1984. She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology in 1992, and is Fellow of the Chapter of Palliative Medicine of the Royal Australian College of Physicians. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine , Singapore (FAMS - 1991) and Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin -1994) and of London (FRCP- 2003). She received the Singapore National award, the Public Service Medal, in 1997 for contributions to hospice care. Dr Goh is one of the pioneers of the hospice movement in Singapore since 1986. She was involved in starting the first hospice home care service in Singapore , presently run by the Hospice Care Association. From 1994 till 1999, she was Medical Director of Assisi Home and Hospice. She moved to the National Cancer Centre in 1999 to start the first Palliative Medicine Department in a government institution, providing consultative palliative care services at major government hospitals.
Khurshid A. Guru, MD, was appointed Director of Robotic Surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in October 2005. A new surgical center opened in 2004 and was the first facility in the Buffalo-Niagara region to offer state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology to patients with prostate cancer. He also will serve as Assistant Professor in the Department of Urologic Oncology at RPCI. Dr. Guru earned his medical degree (1995) at the University of Mysore in Karnataka, India. He completed residency training in Urological Surgery (2005) and a Robotic Surgery Fellowship (2004) at Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI. He also completed an International Fellowship in Urologic-Oncology (2004) at the Urology and Nephrology Center at Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt and a fellowship in Urological Surgery (2000), at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Togus, ME. Dr. Guru’s research interest is the application of robotic surgery in urologic oncology especially urinary reconstruction for bladder cancer. His major interest is robotic surgical education and its incorporation for future generation of surgeons. He leads the growing robotic surgery program in the Department of Urologic Oncology and the Roswell Park Cancer Center for Robotic Surgery. He also assists other surgical departments with bringing the benefits of robotic surgery to patients with gynecologic, thoracic and gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Guru is a member of the Endourological Association, American Urological Association, American Medical Association, and Jammu and Kashmir Urological Society. He has authored and co-authored several journal articles, abstracts and book chapters.
Professor Yun-Fan Liaw is Professor of Medicine at Medical College, Chang Gung University, Taipei, Taiwan. After graduating from the College of Medicine of the National Taiwan University, Professor Liaw went on to specialize in gastroenterology, becoming Director of the Department of Hepatogastroenterology, a position he held from 1976 to 2001. During this time, Professor Liaw was also the Director of the Liver Research Unit of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, where he is now an Advisor. Professor Liaw has professional affiliations with numerous organizations in his field, including the Formosan Medical Association, Gastroenterological Society of Taiwan, Taiwan Association for the Study of the Liver (TASL), Asian-Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL), and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He served as president of TASL from 1994 to 1995 and of APASL from 2000 to 2002. Professor Liaw's main clinical and research interests are in hepatitis and hepatoma. Having published extensively in these areas, he has also served as a reviewer for many journals and is currently on the editorial board of Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Viral Hepatitis, Antiviral Therapy, and Hepatology Review and Liver (now Liver International). He is a former Editor and Senior Editor of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Among the awards he has received are the Distinguished Research Award from the National Science Council, the Academic Award from the Ministry of Education and Distinguished Scientist Award from Prime Minister Taiwan. Professor Liaw has also been elected Academician of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan since 2000.
Dr. Maurie Markman is Vice President for Clinical Research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston , Texas . For more than 20 years Dr. Markman has been engaged in clinical research in the area of gynecologic malignancies, with a particular focus on new drug development and exploring novel management strategies in female pelvic cancers. Dr. Markman has been the primary author, or co-author, on more than 800 published peer-reviewed manuscripts, reviews, book chapters, editorials or abstracts, and he has edited or co-edited 10 books on various topics in the management of malignant disease, including Atlas of Oncology and the most recent edition of Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology. In addition, Dr. Markman has served on numerous editorial boards, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology, and he is the North American Editor of the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology. Dr. Markman is currently Chairman of the Medical Oncology Committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the United States National Cancer Institute-sponsored cooperative group focused on the management of female pelvic malignancies.
Indraneel Mittra is the Director General and Head of the Division of Oncology of the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre in Bhopal , India . He has wide ranging interests that cover clinical, fundamental and public health research in cancer. Before taking up his current position Professor Mittra was the Head of the Surgical Breast Service at the Tata Memorial Cancer Centre in Mumbai. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and holds a Ph.D degree in cancer biology from the University of London . He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He was the founder Principal Investigator of a randomized trial funded by a RO1 grant from the NCI involving 150,000 women which compared physical examination of the breast and visual inspection of the cervix with no screening. He is currently Chairman of the Challenge Fund. Prof. Mittra is on the Editorial Board of Lancet Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, Nature Clinical Practice Oncology, Critical Reviews in Haematology / Oncology, The Breast, International Journal of Surgery, Journal of Biosciences etc. and has authored nearly 100 papers in the field of cancer.
Professor Tony SK Mok was trained at the University of Alberta and subsequently completed his fellowship in medical oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto . After working in a community based oncology practice in Toronto for 7 year Professor Mok took up an academic position at the Department of Clinical Oncology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong . He has been very active in both clinical and laboratory research in the areas of lung cancer, liver cancer and traditional Chinese medicine. He has contributed to over 100 international publications including abstracts, original articles and book chapters. He speaks frequently at international conferences and is particularly active in China and Asia Pacific region. He is the founder of the Lung Cancer Research Group , one of the first multi-center lung cancer study group in Asia Pacific region. He is the chairman of the Hong Kong Cancer Therapy Society and executive committee member of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology. He has also founded the Cancer Patient Resource Center and the Cancer Information Hotline in Hong Kong. In year 2002 he received the Lilly Oncology Pharmacogenomics Award in United States.

Dr. Donald Parkin graduated in medicine from Edinburgh University in 1968. After initial specialisation in internal medicine/gastoenterology, he transferred to public health/epidemiology in 1973. After working in UK , mainly in health service information and planning, Dr. Parkin moved in 1981 to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO) in Lyon , France , as head of the Descriptive Epidemiology Unit. He left that Institute in 2004. Currently, he has four positions:
Dr. Piantadosi is Professor of Oncology and Director of the Oncology Center 's Division of Biostatistics, and has been on the faculty since 1988. He also has joint appointments in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He has extensive experience applying a broad array of biostatistical and mathematical techniques to the analysis of both clinical and laboratory data in cancer studies. Dr. Piantadosi is the director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Biostatistics Core Resource, as well as Biostatistics Cores for Hopkins ' Lung, Lymphoma, and Prostate SPORE grants. Dr. Piantadosi is also the Director of the Biostatistical Center for the New Approaches to Brain Tumor Therapy (NABTT) CNS Consortium, an NIH funded cooperative clinical trials consortium based at Johns Hopkins and involving 10 clinical centers in the U.S. He is Director of the Biostatistics Core for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program Project Grant, and is Co-PI and Biostatistics Director for the John Hopkins Centre for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. In addition to his activities within the Oncology Center , Dr. Piantadosi teaches extensively within and outside Johns Hopkins, serves on a number of cancer center advisory boards, and editorial boards. He teaches Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials, a first quarter 3 credit course, listed both in the Department of Biostatistics and the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation.

Sir Michael Rawlins has been chairman of the National Institute of Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) since its formation in 1999. He is also chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (since 1998). He is an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London , and Emeritus Professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne . He was the Ruth and Lionel Jacobson Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1973 to 2006. At the same time he held the position of consultant physician and consultant clinical pharmacologist to the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. He was vice-chairman (1987-1992) and chairman (1993-1998) of the Committee on Safety of Medicines.
Professor Rajiv Sarin , MD, FRCR, is the Director of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer (ACTREC), the new Basic, Translational and Clinical Research Centre of the Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai , India . The clinical research centre of ACTREC is a 52 bedded state-of-the-art facility for clinical and translational research using novel protocols for cancer imaging, molecular pathology, cancer surgery, high precision radiotherapy, cytotoxic, biological and stem cell therapy. A Clinical Oncologist by training, his clinical interests are focused on the multimodal management of breast cancer and brain tumours and his research focus is on development and testing of novel or pragmatic therapeutic approaches for cancer and in cancer genetics. He is the principal investigator of several ongoing and completed phase II - III clinical trials and has authored several important publications in cancer therapeutics, cancer biology and public health. He is involved in formulation of scientific and ethics review process and competitive funding for cancer research and clinical trials at the Tata Memorial Centre and other apex research funding organizations in India such as the Dept. of Biotechnology and Indian Council for Medical Research, Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi . In his capacity as the Director of a Research Centre of the Apex Cancer Centre of a country of over a billion people, he is actively involved in shaping Public Health Policies, Cost effectiveness of existing and emerging therapies and their wider availability. He is also involved in drafting the proposals for the National Cancer Control Programme. He has championed the cause of Evidence Based Oncology that is appropriate for countries with limited resources. He is also working in developing appropriate, ethical and transparent models of academia-industry partnership for accelerated pre-clinical and clinical development of promising anti cancer approaches.
Professor Schwartsmann is a Full Professor of Medical Oncology at the Federal University in Brazil , and is also concurrently the Director of the South-American Office for Anticancer Drug Development. His other appointments include being a Member of the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine, and Postgraduate Fellow in Medical Oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Middlesex/University College Hospital in London . Professor Schwartsmann obtained his PhD in Cancer Pharmacology from the Free University in Amsterdam , and subsequently attended Post-Doctoral Studies at the Division of Cancer Treatment, US National Cancer Institute. He was the former Director of the new Drug Development Office of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, and was a former Member of the International Affairs Committee and Scientific Program Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Professor Schwartsmann is a member of the editorial board of various international cancer journals, including the Lancet Oncology, Annals of Oncology, The Oncologist and Cancer Treatment Reviews. His research area is focused on clinical trials with new anticancer agents.
Professor Jatin P. Shah graduated from the Medical College of MS University in Baroda , India . He completed his post-graduate training at that Institution, followed by Fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York . He is Professor of Surgery, and Chief of the Head and Neck Service, and Leader of the Head and Neck Disease Management Team, and holds The Elliott W. Strong Chair in Head and Neck Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City . Professor Shah is a national and international leader in the field of head and neck surgery, having served as President of The New York Cancer Society, The New York Head and Neck Society, The Society of Head and Neck Surgeons and The North American Skull Base Society. He is currently Director of The International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies and President of The International Academy of Oral Oncology, and Chairman of the AJCC task force on Head and Neck. He was Chairman of the Joint Council for advanced training in head and neck oncologic surgery in the USA . He was also Chairman of The 4 th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in Toronto in 1996. He has served in varying capacities for The American Board of Surgery, and The American College of Surgeons. Professor Shah has been the recipient of numerous awards from various parts of the world, and is the recipient of honorary fellowships from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh , London and Australia . He has been elected as an honorary member of several head and neck societies in Europe , Asia , Australia , Africa and Latin America . He has been continuously listed in the "Best Doctors in America " directories for several years. He serves on the Editorial and Review Boards of 18 scientific journals and has over 300 peer-reviewed publications, 50 book chapters and 7 books. His textbook of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology won First Prize from The British Medical Association and The Royal Society of Medicine and was awarded the George Davey Howells Prize from the University of London , for the best published book in otolaryngology in the last five years. Dr Nigel Sykes is Medical Director and Consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Christopher's Hospice, London , and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Palliative Medicine at King's College, London . He read medicine at Oxford and was previously Macmillan Lecturer in Palliative Medicine at Leeds . Dr Sykes' research interests have centred on the management of gastrointestinal symptoms in terminally ill patients, and he has written widely on aspects of symptom control both in cancer and in Motor Neurone Disease. He is also interested in ethical issues relating to palliative care and has made presentations both in the media and to British parliamentary committees on this subject area. Currently Dr Sykes is chair of the Education, Training and Projects Committee of the Help the Hospices UK Forum for Hospice and Palliative Care Worldwide, and a member of the Neurological Diseases Strategy Group of the National Council for Palliative Care.

A/Prof Tay Eng Hseon is the Principle Investigator for the Singapore Trial Site for HPV Vaccine Study. His current appointments include Chairman, Medical Board, KK Women's & Children's Hospital; Senior Consultant Gynaecologist, KK Gynaecological Cancer Centre; President, O&G Society of Singapore and Chairman of the Gyanecological Oncology Section of the College of O&G of Singapore. Obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees in Singapore , he went on to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and acquired certifications in Australia and the United Kingdom . He further obtained subspecialisation certification in Gynaecological Oncology from Royal Australia-New Zealand College of OBGYN and is currently the Chairman of the Gyanecological Oncology Section of the College of O&G of Singapore . He has published chiefly in the areas of Gynaecological Oncology and has edited & co-authored a few books. His current research interests are on HPV vaccines, genomic studies of ovarian cancers and anti-angiogenic therapy for gynaecological cancers. He is an appointed member of the Singapore National Medical Research Council. A/Prof Tay frequently gives lectures in regional countries and has organised many medical meetings and advanced gynaecological surgical courses. Having served as chairman and advisor to many medical committees, he has been a member of various professional bodies. Professor Watanabe graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1985, and subsequently joined the hospital as a Resident in the Department of Surgery. Between 1987 to 1993, Professor Watanabe was a member of the medical staff of the Department of Surgery in Tokyo Hitachi Hospital and the Tokyo Metropolitan Bokuto Hospital , before being appointed as the Chief Resident in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the national Cancer Centre in Tokyo . In 1995, Professor Watanabe was appointed a Research Fellow at John Hopkins University 's Department of Pathology & Oncology, under the guidance of Professor Stanley Hamilton. Upon his return in 1998, Professor Watanabe was appointed an Assistant in the Department of Surgical Oncology, and later as a Lecturer in the same department in the University of Tokyo . With his specialization in Colorectal Surgery, Professor Watanabe has also written and published articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Surgery Journal and the Cancer Research Journal. Dr. Sarikapan Wilailak is an associate professor and a Chief of the division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ramathibodi Hospital , Mahidol University , Bangkok , Thailand . Professor John Wong was born in Hong Kong and received his secondary and tertiary education in Sydney , Australia . He graduated with First Class Honors in both Medical Science (1964) and Medicine (1966) and was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in 1971, all from The University of Sydney. In addition, he took his professional qualification in surgery in Australia . Professor Wong returned to Hong Kong in 1975 and joined The University of Hong Kong, becoming Professor of Surgery in 1979 and Head of the Department in 1982. Professor Wong's clinical research interests have been in esophageal and liver cancers, and vascular diseases, and in recent years restricting his work in esophageal cancer. He has published over 500 original scientific papers and chapters in books. As Visiting Professor, he has been invited to speak on numerous occasions, often giving eponymous lectures. Professor Wong is a member or officer of international academic or professional societies. Graduated from Kaohsiung Medical University in 1973, he obtained his Dr. med degree from Berlin Free University in 1984. Dr. Wu received the Award of Excellence in Research from National Science Council. In 1999 he received Outstanding Award in Taipei Veterans General Hospital since 1959 Foundation. Dr. Yip is a professor and the former head of the Department of Surgery at the University Malaya Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. She graduated with an MBBS from the University of Malaya in 1981 and obtained her FRCS (Glasgow) in 1985. Professor Yip started the Breast Clinic in the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) in 1993. The Breast Unit in UMMC currently sees over 300 new cases of breast cancer every year. She currently has over 50 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, and has been involved in several research projects mainly in the area of breast cancer. Professor Yip is the Chairman of the National Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Breast Cancer in Malaysia, which issued its first guideline in December 2002, and is also the Chairman of the Expert Committee for Breast Cancer in the National Cancer Registry of Malaysia. She was on the council of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia from 2000-2006 and is the immediate past-president of the Association of University Surgeons of Asia (2003-2005), as well as an exco member of the Asian Breast Cancer Society and a member of Breast Surgery International. She was also a member of the UICC Capacity Building Oversight Group from 2002 to 2006. She was recently co-chair of the panel on “Health Care Systems and Public Policies” in the Global Summit for the Management of Breast Cancer in Countries of Limited Resources in Bethesda Maryland in January 2005, and is currently on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Breast Health Global Initiatives Foundation. She is on the Advisory Board of the Liberate Study, which is a world-wide multicentric study on the use of hormone replacement therapy after treatment for breast cancer. Her research interests are in the epidemiology and psychosocial impact of breast cancer, and she works closely with the breast cancer support groups and non-government organizations to promote health awareness and early detection of breast cancer. She was awarded the UICC 2004 Reach to Recovery International Asia-Pacific Health Professional Award for her work with breast cancer. Currently her interest is in the early detection and management of breast cancer in developing countries. She is the Vice-Chairperson of the Malaysian Breast Cancer Council, an advocacy group for breast cancer in Malaysia, and is a technical advisor to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association, the main breast cancer support group in the country. She is also a member of the medical expert committee of the “Nur Sejahtera” programme, which was started by the Ministry of Women and Family, to set up wellness clinics for families from the lower socio-economic groups. She was one of the four breast cancer advocates nominated for the 2005 Novartis-MBCC Breast Cancer Leadership Award.
Professor Zalcberg graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1975 and earned his PhD in 1984 in the field of cancer immunology. Following his residency at the Austin Hospital , Melbourne , Australia , a 3 year PhD program under the supervision of Prof. Ian McKenzie and a clinical fellowship in Toronto at the Princess Margaret Hospital , in 1986 he was appointed Director of Medical Oncology at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital (HRH) in Melbourne , Australia . In 1996, he became the Director for Cancer Services at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. Since 1997, Professor Zalcberg has been the Director of the Division of Haematology and Medical Oncology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. In 1987, Professor Zalcberg helped found the Lorne Cancer Conference, now recognised as one of Australia 's major cancer research conferences. He is also a founding member and is the current Chair of the Board of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group (AGITG). He has also served as a Board Member of the Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Foundation as well as a member of a variety of funding agencies and grants committees. Professor Zalcberg has been involved in advising a number of national and multinational pharmaceutical companies.
