The great influenza pandemic of 1918–19 killed between 20 and 50 million people, and during the 20th century similar pandemics occurred on average once every 23 years. Another influenza pandemic is certain to occur. Although we have no way of predicting when this will happen, the emergence of the H5N1 virus and its recent spread to as far as eastern Europe suggest that the world may be close to the next pandemic.

The inaugural Lancet Asia Medical Forum provides a platform for key health administrators, experts from the medical and scientific communities as well as industry representatives to address this critical public health issue.

Jointly organised by The Lancet, Elsevier Health Sciences and Reed Exhibitions Pte Ltd, the Forum is supported by:
  • Singapore Ministry of Health (MoH)
  • Regional Emerging Diseases Intervention Centre (REDI)
  • Asia Pacific Research Foundation for Infectious Diseases (ARFID)
  • International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC) and its member societies within Asia Pacific and Middle East
  • Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB)
  • Singapore Medicine
